Children from low-income families are at greater risk for entering school unprepared. Many children especially those from low income communities, are not read to from birth.

  • By the age of 2, children who are read to regularly display greater language comprehension, larger vocabularies, and higher cognitive skills than their peers.
  • 37 percent of children arrive at kindergarten without the skills necessary for lifetime learning.
  • 1 in 6 children who are not reading at proficient levels in the third grade do not graduate from high school on time.

The most successful way to improve the reading achievement of low-income children is to increase their access to books. The Giving Bookshelf  will help children attending daycare centers from infancy to 4 years old. This will impact their lives forever one book at a time.
